South Africa Tours 2011

Posted on Thursday, April 14, 2011

When you consider the range of experiences in South Africa, it seems almost impossible that a single place could contain it all. How many countries can claim to have lions, penguins and dolphins all living within their borders? How many can offer safaris and surfing as easily as offering wine tastings and art galleries? South Africa tours somehow manages to do all this and more, and blends the best of African and European influences.

Travelers to South Africa often are lured by the chance to safely see big cats, giraffes, antelope, wildebeests and other exotic safari animals up close – animals that most people only get to see in nature documentaries. Kruger National Park in the northeast offers 7,500 square-miles of amazing animal preserves with 16 distinct natural areas, plus deluxe accommodations and services that make safari experiences delightfully comfortable for its visitors.

South Africa’s national imprint is left in cosmopolitan Johannesburg and the leisurely Cape Town area. Johannesburg is home to the county’s major history and art museums, and where you can find cultural pursuits that range from Lipizzaner horse exhibitions to casual shopping in the city’s many craft markets. Cape Town and its surroundings feature many scenic wonders, magnificient seascapes and panoramic vistas and the allure of Cape Town extends throughout its many resort areas along the Atlantic. It's also gateway to the Winelands, South Africa's scenic wine growing region. Both Johannesburg and Cape Town embody the best of South Africa – relaxing fun and a unique culture with a touch of the wild.

Great Restaurants in South Africa

Vacationers who are thinking about planning a South African vacation will have the opportunity to dine at several exquisite places that serve the country's unique cuisine.

Cape Town offers travelers a number of authentic dining experiences, such as the Biesmiellah restaurant, which is located in the city's BoKaap district. The eatery is known for serving a Cape Malay meal, which usually consists of mild and sweet curries and stews. Guests can start with samosas and then try the mouth-watering denningvleis, a sweet-sour lamb soup that incorporates tamarind.

Another fabulous establishment in Cape Town is the 95 Keerom. The large menu features several light dishes, including the seared fresh tuna with capers, olives and tomatoes. Another delicious meal is butternut ravioli cooked in decadent browned sage butter.

Tourists can also head to Africa Cafe, which frequently changes the items on its menu. This allows guests to experience something new each time they visit the restaurant. However, travelers may want to order the Ethiopian black-eyed bean stew or the Moroccan chermula (crispy fish covered in tomato gravy) if they spot it on the menu.

At the Cradle of Humankind, located just outside of Johannesburg, South Africa, visitors can see fossils of some of our species' earliest ancestors.

Comprised of a visitors center and a series of caves, this world-famous attraction gives guests a look into how the human species has evolved. Covering over 47,000 hectares of land, there are 13 hominid fossil sites which provide some of the best evidence of human origins ever discovered.

The Sterkfontein Caves are the site of these exciting finds where visitors on a South African vacation can take guided tours through the underground formation. Guests will learn all about the 2.1 million-year-old skull found and the 3 million-year-old skeleton also discovered here.

At the Maropeng Visitor Centre, travelers take an underground boat ride which takes adventurers on a journey through time. Beginning with the present, the boat trip traces the stages of creation on Earth. Visitors will feel what it was like to exist during the ice age and even when the earth's crust was formed. At the end of the ride, a "black hole" simulator explains how our planet materialized.

In addition to the boat ride, many self-interactive exhibits occupy a large museum.
