Day 1: Arrive Arusha, Tanzania
Welcome to Tanzania; a transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Serena Mountain Village, Arusha is included. Although most flights land at Kilimanjaro International Airport after the sun has set, thoughts of Ernest Hemingway’s legendary novel, "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," will come to mind as you journey the short distance from the airport to your hotel overlooking the reflective waters of Lake Duluti.

Day 2: Tarangire National Park
Dreams become reality this morning as you depart your hotel in safari vehicles for your first safari* game drive. Your destination is prehistoric-looking Tarangire National Park, for your first experience at wildlife viewing in the African wilderness! One of the best parks on the northern circuit to see elephants, Tarangire’s wildlife population includes herds of zebra, jackal, giraffe, gazelle, and buffalo. Enjoy lunch al fresco before a game drive into a landscape dotted with baobab trees and umbrella-thorn acacias en route to your eco-friendly lodge. Join us for a welcome reception and dinner by the campfire.

Day 3: Tarangire Game Drives
Explore Tarangire National Park on a morning game drive that reveals an honest glimpse of an unspoiled Africa. Home to over 550 species of birds (one of the highest number of bird species of any world habitat), and thousands of game animals, Tarangire boasts one of the highest concentrations of African wildlife during the dry season. Your open-top safari vehicle provides you with intimate viewing of this natural wilderness, considered one of Africa’s finest. Spend the afternoon getting to know the local Maasai tribe. Try your hand at spear-throwing, a practical necessity of living in the bush. Get the big picture of life in the plains when you drive over to “The Viewpoint” for panoramic vistas of this wilderness region.

Day 4: Lake Manyara National Park
Go to the head of the class today when you meet Maasai children at a local primary school sponsored by donations from Tauck; continue on to Lake Manyara National Park, a bird watcher’s delight for its pink flamingos, great birds of prey, and some 300 species of migratory birds. Lunch at Lake Manyara Serena Lodge, set on an escarpment overlooking the park, then travel to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, home to Ngorongoro Crater, a wildlife mecca. Your lodge is built on the dormant volcano’s rim, with stunning views of the “lost world” below.

Day 5: A Garden of Eden in Ngorongoro Crater
Explore Ngorongoro Crater, long regarded as Africa’s “Garden of Eden.” Within the crater lie grasslands, forests and a freshwater lake, inspiring a continual migration of animals. From the comfort of your four-wheel-drive vehicle, you’ll have a chance to spot Africa’s celebrated “Big Five” – buffalo, elephant, leopard, the black-maned lion and the rare black rhinoceros. Picnic in the heart of the crater, sure to be a highlight of your safari.

Day 6: Early Man at Olduvai Gorge & a Maasai Village
Over fifty years ago, famed archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey discovered fossilized remains of some of the earliest humans ever found – 1.8 million years old – at Olduvai Gorge. Learn more about the site’s important architectural digs on a docent-led tour, before visiting a Maasai village. Then set off for the Serengeti over unpaved roads. You’ll have outstanding opportunities for wildlife viewing en route to your safari lodge.

Day 7: Hot Air Balloon Above the Serengeti
A hot air balloon flight* at dawn takes you over the Serengeti savanna to observe the morning rituals of the reserve’s wildlife, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush. Look for hyena, leopard, cheetah, zebra, elephant, hippos, and rhinoceros on an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti; it’s also the best place to find prides of lions. Return to the lodge for lunch, then enjoy an evening game drive before dinner.

Day 8: Kirawira Tented Camp

Day 9: Western Serengeti Safari Game Drive

Day 10: Zanzibar / Stone Town
Fly to Zanzibar, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean that was once a wealthy trading center for spices. Enjoy a walking tour of Stone Town, in the main port of Zanzibar City. Rambling narrow streets echo the town’s former glory in colonial mansions and sultans’ palaces, rich with Arabic and Indian influences. Your deluxe hotel overlooks the turquoise sea and white sand beaches.

Day 11: Jozani Forest and a Spice Tour
Explore the wildlife preserve at Jozani Forest, home to the rare Red Colobus Monkey, and many other exotic species unique to the island. Discover the secrets of harvesting spices, the island’s main export. Spend the afternoon exploring the backstreet wonders of Stone Town on your own before joining us tonight for a farewell seafood dinner on the hotel’s rooftop terrace.

Day 12: Journey Home
Tour ends: Dar Es Salaam. Fly to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, where a day room awaits you at Mövenpick Royal Palm Hotel; join us for dinner before departure. Transfers are included to Julius Nuyere International Airport. Allow 3½ hours for flight check-in.
