The full amount of your contribution will go towards weather monitoring equipment provided in your name to enable further research on Mount Kilimanjaro. Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy is established in the United States as a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, and your charitable gift is tax deductible as provided by U.S. law.
Board an overnight flight to Arusha, where you are met and transferred to your hotel, nestled in the heart of a coffee estate.
Head to Arusha National Park after breakfast and join a ranger for a walk through the park to help prepare you for your climb. Located between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru, the park has a wide range of habitats, from the string of crater lakes with flocks of water birds to highland mountain forest containing a wealth of animals that live amid the ancient cedar trees. Pause for a picnic lunch before an afternoon game drive. This evening, attend a group orientation and a welcome dinner.
Drive across the Masai Steppe to the Lemosho Glades at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Begin with a gentle walk through a dense rubber tree and giant fig forest, stopping for a picnic lunch en route to your camp. As you make your way up through the forested terrain, you may see colobus monkey and signs of elephant.
After breakfast in the forest, start a slow walk to aid acclimatization. With abundant bird life all around, trek out of the forest and up into the Hagenia zone. Travel through a savannah of tall grasses and bearded heather, ghostly landscapes of volcanic lava, caves and foamy streams framed by giant groundsels. Your destination is the Shira Plateau, where you camp at 12,200 feet.
As you awaken this morning, a beautiful view of the entire Shira Plateau lies before you. The Shira Plateau is in the high moorlands with views of Kibo in the northwest and Mount Meru to the east and home to many white-necked raven. Explore the plateau today, including the small caves a short walk from the campsite, as you trek east toward Kibo's glacial peak. You have the option of visiting the ancient, collapsed Shira cone, the oldest of Kilimanjaro's three volcanoes. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp at 12,600 feet.
Proceed steadily upward through the heather and into the barren high-altitude desert, toward the "Shark's Tooth" and your camp. The trek is short today to add extra time to acclimatize. From your isolated camp, there are great views over the Shira Plateau and Amboseli Game Reserve.
Today's route takes you steadily upward to the pass at Lava Tower (15,000 feet), a 300-foot volcanic plug with fabulous panoramic views from its peak.
A two-hour trek up a steep, boulder-strewn path leads you to Arrow Glacier Camp at the foot of the Great Western Breach. From this campsite, at 18,750 feet, you begin the steep path up to the crater. The massive headwall of the breach glows a warm red in the afternoon sun. Spend the day relaxing and acclimatizing or explore the surrounding area.
Your day begins at 2 am, when you make your way up the Western Breach. Once you reach the crater rim, you are treated to a stunning view of the Northern Icefields, the Furtwangler Glacier and Uhuru Peak itself. Your camp for tonight is set in soft sands near the retreating vertical ice walls of the Furtwangler Glacier. Rest for a while in the mess tent at Crater Camp (18,750 feet). If you wish, you may explore the strange lunar landscape of the Reusch Crater, the ash pit and the glaciers. You are among the few who experience the summit zone in this way.
You are awakened early today to start your final ascent. After about an hour and a half of hiking, you reach the summit at Uhuru Peak (19,325 feet) in time to watch the beautiful sunrise. Enjoy a celebratory glass of champagne and take in the breathtaking scenery. After time on the peak, begin the descent to your last campsite on the mountain.
After breakfast, descend to the base of the mountain, where your Abercrombie & Kent representative meets you for lunch. Afterward, you are transferred to Arusha, where the balance of your afternoon is at leisure at KIA Hotel before your international departure flight.
